These 36″ handmade bauxite Ghana trade beads are created in a time honored tradition by master stone workers from in the village of Akyem Abompe.

The act of obtaining bauxite is linked to traditional religious practices. It is claimed that Bepoben (Red Hill) is the abode of the guardian spirit of the Abompe village. This spirit is also the custodian of the bauxite resources. To carry on operations at the mines, the workers first provide a drink of palm wine or schnapps to the chief and elders of the village which is to be given to the guardian and ancestral spirits.

These beads have moved between continents, countries and owners for decades. Imperfections are possible and only add to the character.
